Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Grace and peace be upon you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I am grateful for your inquiry regarding the significance of giving and supporting the church according to the Gospel, as well as the question of whether to give exclusively to the Church or to other causes.
The act of giving holds deep theological significance within the Christian faith, and it is rooted in the teachings of the Gospel. Throughout Scripture, we find a consistent call to be generous and good stewards of our resources, including financial contributions to the work of God’s Kingdom. Allow me to offer you some insights on why giving and supporting the Church align with the Gospel message.
1. Biblical Principles of Giving: The Bible teaches us that giving is an expression of our love for God and our fellow human beings. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, we read, “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Giving is not merely an obligation, but a joyful response to God’s abundant grace and provision in our lives.
2. Supporting the Church: The church, as the body of Christ, plays a crucial role in fulfilling God’s purposes on earth. It serves as a gathering place for worship, teaching, fellowship, and the equipping of believers for ministry. By giving to the church, we provide the necessary resources to sustain its ministries, support its leaders, and meet the needs of its members. Supporting the church ensures its ability to share the Gospel, provide spiritual guidance, and enact tangible acts of compassion within the parish community.
3. Discerning Giving: While supporting the local church is vital, it is also commendable to give to other worthy causes. Generosity is not limited to a single avenue. However, it is essential to prayerfully discern where and how to distribute your resources. Seek God’s guidance and consider your personal beliefs, the impact of your giving, and the alignment of the cause with biblical values. Giving to other causes should not undermine the support we offer to the local church but rather complement it as part of our broader commitment to God’s work in the world.
Your generous support of the Church is truly admirable, and it reflects your dedication to advancing God’s Kingdom. As you continue to consider where to direct your giving, I encourage you to reflect on the unique role of the local church in nurturing spiritual growth, providing parish community, and facilitating the work of God among His people.
May the Lord bless you abundantly as you prayerfully consider your giving, and may your support of the church and other worthy causes bring honor to God and contribute to His redemptive mission “on earth as it is in heaven.”Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Dominic Toan Tran, Pastor
