Let us heed the call to pray for vocations!
On this 4th Sunday of Easter, we come together in a joyous celebration of
Vocation Sunday. This special day, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, is a
time dedicated to prayerfully seeking an increase in vocations to the priesthood.
It holds significance as we are reminded of Jesus’ words, “I am the good
shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” These words invite
us to reflect on the sacrificial nature of the priesthood and the deep call to
shepherd God’s flock with love and selflessness.
Throughout history, God has continuously reached out to individuals, calling
them to be priests and to serve as shepherds for His people. This divine calling is
deeply personal, as we hear in the words of the prophet Jeremiah, “Before I
formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a
prophet to the nations I appointed you” (Jeremiah 1:5). These words emphasize
the notion that each priest is not just chosen, but appointed by God for a specific
purpose, that resonates with their very being.
The concept of sacrificial service lies at the core of the priesthood. To lay
down one’s life for others, to serve selflessly and with love, requires a willingness
to make sacrifices. The call to priesthood is to imitate Christ, the Good Shepherd,
in His selfless love and service. It is a call to prioritize the needs of others above
one’s own, to lead by example, and to be willing to make sacrifices for the sake
of the Gospel. In a world that often values self-interest and personal gain, the
idea of sacrifice can be misunderstood or dismissed. Society’s prevailing voice
may discourage acts of sacrifice, promoting a culture that prioritizes individual
satisfaction over selfless service. However, the Gospel message challenges this
worldly perspective by highlighting Jesus’ sacrificial love and service as the
ultimate example for all His followers.Fr. Dominic Toan Tran, Pastor
Dear brothers and sisters, the Gospel message of Good Shepherd Sunday
invites us to follow the example set by Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who came
not to be served but to serve, ultimately laying down His life as a ransom for
many. Let us heed the call to pray for an abundance of vocations to the
priesthood, supporting and uplifting all priests who have devoted their lives to
shepherding God’s people. As your pastor, I humbly ask you to remember all
priests in your prayers – their sacrifices, their challenges, and their unwavering
commitment to serving the Church. The path of priesthood is not an easy one,
but through your prayers we find strength and support in our ministry. May we all
be inspired by the Good Shepherd’s example and strive to follow in His
footsteps, embracing a life of sacrificial love, service, and dedication to the glory
of God.
