Looking at the Cross in Our Daily Life
Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, a
meaningful tradition that dates back to the 4th century. It is a special time for us
to reflect on how the Cross has truly transformed the lives of believers. The story
of St. Helena’s discovery of the True Cross in Jerusalem around 326 is inspiring,
turning an object once associated with shame into a powerful symbol of hope
and salvation. This feast, often called the Triumph of the Cross, differs from the
more solemn Good Friday, as it is a joyful celebration of the victory won through
Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
Through the Cross, we understand that salvation and new life are precious
gifts from God. The Cross, once a symbol of execution, has been transformed
into a symbol of God’s profound love. As followers of Jesus, we are called to
honor the Cross not only with words but also through our daily actions. It reminds
us to bear witness to His teachings and deeds, which often challenge societal
norms. The Gospel reading for this feast reminds us of Nicodemus’ late-night
visit to Jesus, where Jesus explains God’s plan for redemption using the imagery
of Israel’s wilderness journey. The Israelites were punished for complaining
against God by suffering from serpent attacks. Their healing came when they
looked upon the bronze serpent Moses lifted up on a pole, a moment that reflects
Jesus’ own lifting on the Cross. Just as those bitten by serpents were healed
through faith, we are invited to look to the Cross for eternal life. Suffering and
death are not the end; through the Cross, we find resurrection, hope, and glory.
Upon reflection, we see that the importance of the Cross lies in a God who
loves us more than we can imagine – a love demonstrated by His willingness to
endure great suffering so that we may be redeemed. Grace, often hard to
understand, becomes clearer during our times of trial. It is in bearing our burdens
that God’s grace supports us, showing the power of trusting in His strength. We
need to focus on Jesus Christ, strengthening our bond with Him both when we
pray and as we go about our daily routines. Making the Sign of the Cross before
and after prayer serves as a strong reminder. In this simple act, we affirm our
faith and find strength in the message of the Cross.
Dear brothers and sisters, as we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the
Cross, let’s open our hearts to its profound message. May we carry the spirit of
the Cross into our communities and everyday lives, shining with love, hope, and
grace. By doing so, we truly honor Christ’s victory and encourage those around
us to discover the transformative power of the Cross in their own journeys.Rev. Dominic Toan Tran, Pastor
