Let’s carry our cross each day with love.
The 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time invites us to reflect on the journey of faith
and discipleship that Jesus calls us to follow. Nature offers us meaningful
lessons, reminding us that life is a fleeting journey. Sayings like “make hay while
the sun shines” emphasize the importance of seizing opportunities when they
come. This perspective encourages us to think about the human experience,
especially as we consider the life-giving teachings of our faith.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us: “Whoever does not carry his own
cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” This passage prompts us to
examine our attachments and realize that letting go of our self-interest is
essential. Sacrifice becomes a personal journey, releasing us not only of our
physical belongings but also the parts of ourselves we cherish: our desires,
fears, and the comfort of feeling in control.
We often struggle with the natural urge to hold tightly to our desires, like fists
clenched against the unknown. However, this grip is ultimately harmful and
causes emotional and spiritual discomfort. In this struggle, Jesus asks us to open
our hands, a gesture that symbolizes letting go of self-made boundaries and
embracing transformation. By opening our hands, we not only accept God’s gifts
but also have the opportunity to become sources of love and kindness to those
around us. This act of openness truly reflects the essence of loving God and
others. When we carry our crosses, we learn God’s wisdom, which helps us
pursue selfless love and deep connections on our journey through a life of trust.
In the first reading from the Book of Wisdom we are asked, “Who can know
God’s counsel?” God’s understanding goes far beyond what we can imagine. It is
through God’s power and wisdom that our paths are guided, leading us toward
righteousness and salvation. Embracing this divine counsel requires trust and
humility, which are necessary for us to carry our crosses and follow Jesus. Each
cross helps us grow closer to Christ and to one another.
Dear brothers and sisters when we surrender and open our hearts to God, we
receive His blessings and the incredible power of His love to transform us. Let us
strive to live each day with love and an open heart, guided by the wisdom of the
Cross. Let’s embrace the call to reach out and hold one another’s hands in love,
building a community that reflects God’s steady and loving grace in our lives.Rev. Dominic Toan Tran, Pastor
